What to Expect for you First Appointment

We offer a nurturing and confidential space for UCR students, staff and faculty who are survivors --and supporters of survivors-- of sexual violence, relationship violence, and stalking.

We know that coming to a new space or connecting with a new resource can be tough--so we want to guide you through what to expect during your first appointment.

Before you make your first connection with your advocate, you will be asked to complete an intake form. This is a form that collects your basic information like name, pronouns, and contact information. You are invited to fill out as much as you are comfortable with, with the understanding that our office will not share any information outside of our confidential space without your explicit consent.

You will then connect with your advocate (in-person, on the phone, or via Zoom). In that meeting, your advocate will introduce themselves and spend a bit of time getting to know you. There is some baseline information our advocate will try to gather to best understand resources and options available for you. Throughout your conversation, you get to decide how much or how little information you would like to tell the advocate about your experience.

Your advocate will connect with you about your goals and what type of support you are seeking. Your advocate is here for you every step of the way, no matter what you choose moving forward. Before the end of your first session, your advocate will recap your conversation and create a plan for your next step. They will also help to set up any additional appointments that might be needed.

Our advocates may just have one appointment with a new client, but they are a;sp available to continue to have an ongoing relationship with you during your time at UCR.

If any specific questions come up prior to your first appointment, please don't hesitate to reach out! We are happy to connect via email advocate@ucr.edu or by phone at 951-827-6225.
